WOMEN’S SECTION
PROFILE: The Sherwin Group/Sheri Fedson and Michelle Amundson
A Perfect Team
Sheri Fedson and Michelle Amundson bring their unique talents and special services to The Sherwin Group.
Sheri Fedson and Michelle Amundson met in September of 2006. Amundson had moved to town with her husband less than a year earlier and had been trying to get used to staying at home instead of working. When she decided that she needed to get out of the house a few days a week, she applied for a part-time administrative position at EFS, a financial services business in Mankato.
Fedson was the office manager for EFS at the time. She interviewed Amundson—and walked out of that first meeting confident that she had found the right fit.
“I knew instantly that she would be perfect,” Fedson says. “My colleague Dan [Sherwin] and I practically skipped out of the interview, because we knew we had found the right person for the job.”
Amundson and Fedson have been friends and colleagues since then. In January, they also became partners, when they officially took over ownership of The Sherwin Group, where their individual expertises add up to a unique concept that pairs investment advising (Amundson’s focus) with comprehensive insurance options (Fedson’s specialty).
“We handle different aspects of the business,” Amundson explains, “but it’s wonderful to have her as support. I couldn’t do this alone.”
Full-time Financial
Michelle Amundson moved to Mankato in 2005 for her husband’s job. Both of them had been working for Anderson Windows in Stillwater, but when he was assigned a sales territory in the Mankato region, she quit her job and relocated with him.
Although she stayed busy taking care of their two daughters and managing much of the process of building a new home, she knew that she wanted to do more with her time. That’s why she applied for the job at EFS, and why she happily accepted when it was offered to her.
Amundson’s job quickly went from part-time to full-time; her responsibilities evolved too. Once she started doing compliance work, she discovered how much she enjoyed being involved in the financial industry.
“The more I got into it, the more I loved it,” she says. “I had found my passion. It was almost like it was fate, like it was all meant to work out this way. I just couldn’t be happier.”
Now Amundson, who started working with Dan Sherwin to provide retirement planning services in 2008, is planning to begin working toward her Certified Financial Planner certification this year. That will allow her to provide even more services to her clients—many of whom have become like family, she says.
“I love meeting with the clients,” she says. “I enjoy getting to know them and developing relationships with them.”
Fedson says that is one of Amundson’s strengths. “She is very relationship oriented,” Fedson says. “It’s not just transactional. It’s about the relationships with the clients.”
Amundson wasn’t surprised by how much she appreciates working with her clients, but she was surprised by how much enjoyment she gets from the work itself. She especially enjoys being able to help manage accounts locally, instead of assigning them to a mutual fund manager elsewhere. She works with her clients to develop portfolios that match their needs and then watches the market closely on their behalf.
“I love that part of it so much,” she says. “In fact, when the market closes, I often think, ‘Darn—I have to wait until tomorrow now!’”
Now Mankato feels more like home than Stillwater did.
“Everywhere I go, from the grocery store to the YMCA, it feels like home,” Amundson says. “There is definitely a community feeling here that I haven’t experienced before.
Inside Insurance
In the almost 22 years since Sheri Fedson started working at EFS, she has done everything from administrative tasks and office management to assisting security advisors and selling health insurance.
Sometimes, she was doing all or most of those at the same time. But now, she’s able to focus her attention on the one thing she does best.
“Now, health insurance is all that I do,” Fedson says. “And I really do love what I’m doing.
She admits that most people don’t think of health insurance as fun—and she acknowledges that it’s a complex subject that can be frustrating to deal with. But the joy she gets out of working one-on-one with clients and the satisfaction she receives from helping them solve problematic situations makes it all worthwhile to her.
“I enjoy working with people,” she says. “My clients are anywhere from 18 up to 95 years old. There’s always a variety, and it makes the days go faster for me. And for me, it’s rewarding to know that I’m helping someone with a need they have.”
The clients, Amundson observes, appreciate her help as well. “They love her,” she says. “It can be so confusing, and she handles it so well.”
She handles it so well that many of her clients have found creative ways to thank her. She’s received personal cards, prayers, poems and other gifts from people she’s worked with—and dozens of hugs as well.
“Hugs are so cool,” Fedson smiles. “From the seniors especially. They do tell you that they love you. They are so wonderful. And it feels good to know that you were able to do something that helped them out.”
Fedson grew up in Austin and moved to Mankato in 1981 while her husband was attending Minnesota State University, Mankato. “We’ve just stayed since then,” she says.
She started her career as a secretary in an insurance office in 1982. In 1990, she started working at EFS. In both places, she found mentors who helped her understand the business and grow both personally and professionally. “These people who mentored me helped to grow into what I’m doing now,” she says. “I’m lucky I had them.”
Dan Sherwin is one of those mentors. He helped her develop her specialty in health insurance by asking her to join him when he purchased a block of business and needed help handling the additional client load. Fedson was honored when he asked her to join him and Amundson when they spun The Sherwin Group off as a separate business in 2009.
“That Dan thought enough of me to have me be part of this with him means so much,” Fedson says. “And I feel lucky to have Michelle for a partner, too.”
